Shock |
Back to Library |
Shock is a clinical state associated with
generalized failure
of tissue perfusion.
In contrast to local failure of vascular flow, a systemic
reduction in tissue blood flow, manifest by profound low blood
pressure (hypotension), is clinically termed shock.
Among the many causes of shock are:
• severe failure of the pumping mechanism of the heart
(cardiogenic shock)
• blockage of major arteries (obstructive shock)
• lack of blood to pump (hypovolaemic shock) due to
haemorrhage or severe fluid loss.
Abnormal dilatation of peripheral vessels causing lack of venous
return of blood may also be responsible, arising in cases of
septicaemic shock/endotoxic shock, anaphylactic shock and neurogenic shock. |
