Fungal infection of the nervous system is
usually seen in patients who are immunosuppressed.
Infection of the nervous system by fungi is frequently seen in patients who are
immunosuppressed (most commonly following organ transplantation or anti-cancer
chemotherapy, or with HIV infection and AIDS).
Candidiasis causes multiple small cerebral abscesses in the CNS, usually
secondary to septicaemia caused by primary Candida infection elsewhere.
Aspergillus is another organism that affects the brain from haematogenous
spread, usually from primary lung involvement, leading to formation of fungal
abscesses.
Phycomycoses (mucormycosis, zygomycosis) infect the brain by local spread from
primary infection of the paranasal sinuses. Fungi typically invade along
vessels, causing vascular thrombosis and cerebral infarction.
Cryptococcosis is due to a yeast-like organism that most commonly causes a
fungal meningitis in immunosuppressed patients but may also affect patients with
normal immune function. |
