Hiatus Hernia |
Back to Library |
In hiatus hernia the stomach moves into the
thorax.
Hiatus hernia, in which the upper part of the stomach moves through the
diaphragmatic oesophageal
hiatus into the thoracic cavity, is a common and important condition.
Patients often complain of symptoms of reflux oesophagitis, and there may be
peptic ulceration
in the intrathoracic part of the stomach and lower oesophagus.
In sliding hiatus
hernia
the stomach herniates through the diaphragmatic hiatus through which the lower
oesophagus
normally passes.
In paraoesophageal hiatus hernia the stomach protrudes through
a separate
defect alongside the oesophagus. |
